This plant is native to Brazil and known in Hawaii as Poha. Poha (Physalis peruviana) is also known as the Cape Gooseberry, Inca Berry or Golden Berry. Poha grows as a shurb with heart shaped velvety leaves. The flowers are yellow and bell shaped. A papery calyx becomes the protective cover around the fruit as it grows. The fruit is round and about 1" in diameter with a smooth skin.
