Plants are at a mature stage and currently producing ready-to-bloom buds eager to present flowers that have become world renown.

Orchid Features:

  • Winter Bloomer - Currently with Buds/Blooms
  • Average Plant Height: 5" from top of media (see pics)
  • Overall height with pot included 9-11"
  • Bloom: Star-shaped white flower, 5" height
  • Fragrant: Yes
  • Pot Size: 5.5" Round

This orchid’s tale is intertwined with that of Charles Darwin, the famed naturalist.

Discovered in the heart of Madagascar’s lush rainforests, this botanical wonder known as Angraecum sesquipedale, or Darwin’s Orchid has grown to become "King of the Angraecums." A star of the plant kingdom, also known as the Christmas Orchid or Star of Bethlehem Orchid, stands tall at a majestic height of 1 meter at its maximum, its dark green leaves tinged with a hint of gray, reaching out to the heavens.

An epihyte with thick, dark grey roots that snake their way along the tree trunks. But the pièce de résistance of this botanical masterpiece is its nectar spur. Like a comet’s tail, it trails behind the flower, reaching lengths between 27 cm to a staggering 43 cm, with an average length of 33 cm.

Two varieties of this species grace the landscapes of Madagascar: A. sesquipedale var. angustifolium and A. sesquipedale var. sesquipedale. The former, smaller and with narrower leaves, makes its home in the white sands of littoral forests, now under threat due to titanium dioxide mining. The latter variety, on the other hand, is a common sight along the coast and across the eastern rainforest of Madagascar and cultivated throughout the world.

Angraecum Orchid Care:

  • Temperature: Likes it warm
  • Light: Prefers medium to high levels

To keep this orchid healthy and happy, it likes to be warm and prefers low to medium light. Make sure the soil is always a bit damp throughout the year.
