This epiphytic genus originates from the lush landscapes of Southeastern Panama, Colombia, and Venezuela, gracing the wet forestland with its large, captivating green flowers. Blooms emit a captivating fragrance reminiscent of banana popsicles, with subtle undertones of jasmine.

Note: This family of orchids will go through a period of dormancy after it blooms.  Leaves will yellow and drop after blooming during dormancy period!  This is completely normal.  The pseudobulb may be completely bald.  Cut back on watering to once every 2 weeks.  In the spring, new growth will emerge, resume regular watering to keep media moist but not soggy.

Cycnoches Orchid Care / Culture:

  • Temperature: Keep your Cycnoches chlorochilon in a warm to hot environment.
  • Light: Provide bright open shade or partial shade with excellent air movement.
  • Water: Regularly, dry between. During the growth period, maintain consistent moisture. After flowering, reduce or stop watering until new growth develops sufficient roots. Beware of spider mites; combat them by ensuring good moisture and air circulation during growth.
  • Fertilizer: Use balanced or high-nitrogen fertilizer while the plants are in growth. Over-fertilizing is unlikely during this phase. Consider incorporating a teaspoon of Nutricote into your potting media, top dress with black cow or well-rotted animal manure, and apply half-strength liquid fertilizer every other watering. Transition to a bloom-booster like 5-50-17 as the plants mature. Avoid fertilizing when the plants are dormant.
  • Potting: Opt for medium-fine fir bark in clay or plastic pots or sphagnum moss in clay pots. For a natural touch, mount them with sphagnum at the roots. Hanging pots or mounts is ideal for optimal air movement. Keep in mind that mounted plants may need more frequent watering, especially during the hottest season – up to two or more times per day
