Stanhopea reichenbachiana
Stanhopea reichenbachiana is a collector's orchid species in an interesting genus with fragrant "bucket-like" blooms that grow downwards. Naturally occurring from Colombia to Ecuador between the elevations of 1600ft and 3200ft. This medium sized orchid is ideally grown in hanging baskets to best feature its stunning ivory white, waxy flowers when in full bloom. Thriving in intermediate temperatures (hot-warm grower) and in wet forests (high humidity) the Stan. reichenbachiana will flourish in indirect bright light. Repot if necessary after the plant has bloomed in the summer.
Stanhopea reichenbachiana orchid features:
- Mature Size - Blooming Stage
- Plant is currently producing a BUD
- Buds will face downward and droop/cascade
- Average Plant Height: 17-21"
- Pot Size: 4"
- Blooming Season: Winter-Spring
- Flower Size: 5"
- Orchid Bloom Color: White
Stanhopea growing culture:
- Light: 2000-4000 foot candles (21000-43000 lumens)
- Temperature: 70-80F (daytime) 60F nights; if keeping on the cooler end of the spectrum, also keep plant drier to prevent rot
- Water: Water heavily to produce strong pseudobulbs and prevent foliar spotting, never allowing to dry out completely, even during the winter months when growth may slow or stop.
- Humidity: 40-80% ; Air circulation will help to reduce leaf damage by leafspot fungi
- Fertilize: Regularly and heavily during active growth using with the recommended 30-10-10 formulation. As growths mature and pseudobulbs are produced, fertilizer should be reduced or switched to a high phosphorus formulation such as 10-30-20 to stimulate flower production.
- Potting: Best when new growths begin, typically in the spring.
- Medium: Fine-grade fast draining; fir bark and perlite (3:1)
